Sometimes, we all need a boost. From early morning coffee to an endorphin-fueled run, the same can even be said for our skincare! Thanks to advancements in biotechnology (aka using living organisms to develop new products), skincare is venturing into the cellular level with regenerative aesthetics to elevate skin health and combat signs of aging. What’s at the forefront of this evolution? Exosomes. Continue reading below to learn all about this scientific and beauty breakthrough and why plant-based exosomes could be what’s missing from your daily skincare regimen.
Exosomes explained…
Exosomes are tiny particles (nanoparticles) packed with bioactive molecules—including growth factors, proteins, lipids, nucleic acid, and others—that have a unique way of interacting between and within cells.

So, what are plant-based exosomes and why does QUALITY matter?
Plant-based exosomes, also known as phyto-exosomes, are bioactive nanoparticles (there’s that fancy word again!) that are extracted from botanical resources with high concentrations of antioxidants, peptides, and growth factors. Although tiny in size, these phyto-rich compounds deliver big advantages by helping to stimulate collagen production, improve skin elasticity, and calm red or irritated skin.
Plant-based vs. stem cell-derived exosomes
Traditionally, exosomes have been sourced from human or animal stem cells, which could be from bone marrow, body fat, umbilical cord blood, etc. Although effective, traditional methods can also raise concerns about ethics, biosafety, purification, sustainability, potency, regulation, and cross-species contamination or disease (um, no thank you!). Thanks to biotechnology, plant-based exosomes are an innovative alternative that share many of the same elements as human or animal stem cells while feeling good about where they come from. Unlike stem cell exosomes, plant-based exosomes can be ethically sourced, cruelty-free, renewable, stable, and safer for long-term topical use. Additionally, when compared to human exosomes that require refrigeration and a much higher level of care in order to preserve stability, plant-based exosomes do not.
Exosomes + Skin Care
Now comes the fun part… When infused into topical skincare products, such as serums, these revolutionary phyto-exosomes become an interconnected playground for cell-to-cell communication. After applying the topical solution to the skin, the exosomes can permeate and become absorbed by cells, allowing the biological responses to be activated. The effects of this molecular magic can produce numerous benefits for the health and appearance of skin, including:
- Stimulated collagen production and improved skin elasticity
- Accelerated skin repair and healing
- Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Smoother skin texture, firmness, and suppleness
- Retained moisture for hydrated skin
- Balanced skin tone and reduced hyperpigmentation
- Enhanced anti-inflammatory reactions to diminish acne and rosacea
- Visibly healthier, more youthful-looking skin and a radiant complexion
Meet PRFCT’s Plant-Based Exosomes & All-Trans Retinol: SKIN CEO

If there’s one thing our PRFCT family knows, it’s that we won’t develop a product we don’t fully believe will change your skin. That’s why we’re so confident to introduce you to SKIN CEO, which combines the reigning boss of anti-aging, retinol, with the promising new edition of plant-derived exosomes to effectively accelerate skin renewal and enhance cellular repair. Plus, Skin CEO blends peptides, vitamins C and E, squalane, and ferulic acid for unparalleled antioxidant support to truly transform your skin. Skin CEO has a trillion detectable exosome nanoparticles per mL., twice the concentration of "membrane positive EVs" compared to some human exosome products currently available.

Exosomes as Skin Boosters

In addition to serums and creams, exosomes can also be paired with skin treatments as “skin boosters” enabling the exosomes to penetrate deeper into the skin for supercharged repair and renewal.* When combined together, exosomes can amplify treatments, such as microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling (RFM), and certain lasers for enhanced absorption and improved effectiveness of the regenerative ingredients. Exosomes are also known to accelerate the healing process, potentially helping to reduce recovery in comparison with traditional treatment methods.
Although exosomes are not approved for injection in the U.S. (yet) due to potential safety risks, including infection and immune reactions, they are widely accepted and deemed safe as a topical adjunct to certain skin treatments to help improve skin appearance, hydration, and texture.
*Just like our Skin CEO, the skin boosters available with PRFCT treatments are plant-based.
