Pre-Treatment:

It is important to know the following information prior to your treatment. With a treatment of Kybella, it takes at least 4-6 weeks for the product to dissolve the fat. Depending on the area being treated and the desire for optimal results, 2-6 treatments may be required. These are typically performed 6 weeks apart. Tenderness and swelling WILL occur immediately after the procedure and can last for at least 1 week post-procedure. Over the weeks to follow, that unwanted fat pocket will disappear gradually. The swelling can definitely be bothersome to some, so it is best to plan out your Kybella treatments accordingly.

What to expect:

  • Bruising and hematomas of the skin are possible.
  • Swelling, redness, pain, numbness, firmness, nodules and skin changes are possible. Itching, skin tightness, and injection site warmth may occur. These typically last 5-14 days but can persist for longer in some cases.
  • Although rare, the following are possible: nerve injury, throat pain, headache, increased blood pressure, skin discoloration or scarring, fainting, enlarged lymph nodes, hives, and neck pain or pain in the area being treated.
  • Skin infection, ulcers, and hyperpigmentation are a possibility with any injection type of procedure.
  • Rare side effects include weakness or asymmetry of the lip, smile changes, and trouble swallowing when treating the submental/chin area.

Pre-Treatment Instructions:

  • To decrease the risk of bruising, avoid any blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, motrin, and Ibuprofen in the week before your treatment. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to your treatment as well.
  • You may begin taking oral Arnica pellets starting two days before your treatment and for the week after to assist with healing and recovery. We do carry these at the office.

Post-Treatment Instructions:

  • Ice packs may be used to the treated area during the first 12 hours. Ice for 15min on every hour. Wrap in thin towel to avoid frostbite since numbness is common following the procedure.
  • Do NOT massage the area.
  • If you can tolerate Motrin/Ibuprofen, you can take this and for a few days after for discomfort.
  • Avoid exercise for 24 hours.
  • For chin/submental treatments, sleep with head elevated on 2-3 pillows.
  • Bruising and hematomas of the skin are possible. Oral Arnica can be taken to help with recovery.
