Vitamin B-12 Shots
Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement and a prescription medication. Vitamin B12 is required for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function and DNA synthesis. Deficiency is common, affecting between 1.5% and 15% of the general population. Evidence from recent studies suggests the prevalence of B12 deficiency in young adults might be greater than previously assumed. Deficiency is characterized by anemia, fatigue, weakness, constipation, and neurological changes. Some may exhibit depression, confusion, and poor memory. Those who are particularly at risk are older adults whose changes in their GI tract decreases their ability to absorb B12. Vegetarians are at great risk of developing deficiency because natural food sources of B12 are limited to animal foods.
Adequate levels of B12 can promote cardiovascular health. Depending on the individual’s diet, vitamin B12 may act to increase metabolism, improve mood, and boost athletic performance.
